Aviation EDM As Part of a Lean Manufacturing Initiative
Aviation EDM Video
In Aviation EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) has become an important facet of advanced manufacturing techniques. Machining processes are forever evolving into new technical territories and often new advances are achieved across multi-dimensional planes – in terms of improvements in machining accuracy, efficiency drives via automation/robotic handling, improvements in power management and indeed, the combination of alternative machining processes themselves. For instance, it is common to achieve efficiency savings over single process machining by combining 5 axis machining and electrical discharge machining. Electrical discharge machining (EDM machining) is a non-conventional machining process using electrodes and a controlled electrical current as a cutting tool, and is effectively a non-contact machining process, perfect for tight tolerance machining, precise finish machining and manufacturing with challenging and ultra tough materials, Titanium alloys being a prime example.
Aviation EDM: Non-contact Machining Processes to Achieve World-Class Machining Precision
Aviation EDM – or aviation electrical discharge machining is useful as a post-traditional machining process within aviation manufacturing, and the 2 common derivatives are wire erosion EDM and spark erosion EDM. Both of these aviation EDM processes use electrical discharge machining principles – ie, they remove material without touching or applying any forces to the work-piece, but they differ in application. Spark erosion EDM applies a high frequency – pulsating electrical current between electrode and machined component via a die – hence the nick name, die sink EDM machining. Wire erosion EDM applies the machining current via a wire passing through the component. Both of these processes are ‘very kind’ to the material and so, can be used for delicate internal machining and manufacturing of thin-walled components, avoiding the stresses and distortions that might occur during traditional, contact machining processes such as 5 axis machining & turning, and mill-turn machining.
