Over the next few months, Di-Spark Ltd will be publishing ‘The Guide to EDM’, a book authored by Managing Director, David Light.
The book will be posted as a series of articles via our website blog. We hope you enjoy and benefit from this work. Today, we look at the preface of the book, the author and the company, Di-Spark Ltd.
1. PREFACE: Guide to precision Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
There is no doubt that we live in changing times with the march of technology gaining momentum at an ever-increasing rate. Engineers of today are seeking greater manufacturing productivity, reduction in product to market times and the most cost-effective means of production. To this end Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a precision machining process that is not being fully exploited by many precision machining customers throughout the UK and indeed, across the globe.
This booklet attempts to give the reader a better insight into the EDM machining process and an understanding of how it works. Only with knowledge and awareness can the process be made to work for you. Whatever your opinion, this is a book that you should read if you want to explore the world of EDM manufacturing.
This book is aimed at every engineer, designer and production engineer who is reluctant to take the quantum leap and accept Electrical Discharge Machining as one of the fastest, most accurate, most versatile, most flexible and most economical methods of manufacture.
This book is written to help all readers understand EDM machining and to generally promote understanding of the process.
On some technical issues I have taken liberties in striving to make them more understandable. Although they may not be strictly technically correct I hope that the reader will not take exception and rather they appreciate the context within which it was written.
2. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Guide to Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
David Light is the Managing Director of Di-Spark Limited, a company that has been specialising in EDM manufacturing for over 30 years.
Di-Spark Ltd are specialists in wire erosion EDM, spark erosion EDM and also run extensive 5 axis machinining, large part machining and automated CNC mill-turn cells within their Hampshire based facility. In short, Di-Spark Ltd. have facilities, and a level of knowledge and experience as comprehensive as any other company in the country. Any Electrical Discharge Machining application from one-off’s to production work can be tackled with confidence. A wide range of other precision machining processes enable Di-Spark Ltd. to offer turn-key solutions to various precision manufacturing requirements. The company run both EDM and conventional machining facilities so customers can be assured that they are receiving the most efficient method of manufacture to their problems.
Di-Spark Ltd. have comprehensive computerised production control & quality control management systems. The purpose of these systems is to plan the various manufacturing operations of the business so that customer specifications are met to agreed delivery dates. The system will plan activities in such a way that resources are used to a higher level of efficiency thus improving the overall service to customers and ensuring the manufacture of world-class precision components
The combination of many years’ experience in the precision engineering industry and the application of high technology resources working to international quality system standards (AS9100 Rev C AND ISO 9001:2008) enable Di-Spark Ltd. to give its customers quality products, delivered on time at competitive prices.
In the recent past, the company looked extensively at the use of EDM in general precision engineering and found that EDM was little understood, regarded as a black art and not utilised to its full potential.
These conclusions were the results of an extensive piece of research carried out by Di-Spark Ltd. involving a survey of 1,700 engineering companies
Di-Spark Ltd. committed to an education programme to raise the profile of EDM among engineers as knowledge and awareness of the process increases its range of applications
