Precision Machining Sub-Contractors: Wire EDM
Looking at high technology industries that rely on external precision machining sub-contractors, such as aerospace, aviation, satellite, defence, medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, high end motorsport, oil, gas and energy markets, innovation within manufacturing is key to success – giving industry the oxygen to design ever more complex, lighter and ingenious components or indeed, enhance the properties of precision components machined from exotic and contemporary materials. Electrical Discharge Machining – both Wire EDM and Spark EDM, are advanced machining processes carrying unique capability.
Wire EDM For The Machining Of Delicate Sub-Assemblies
Components and assemblies are often comprised of hundreds if not thousands of sub-assemblies and parts and some of these sub-assemblies are delicate, thin gauge or thin-walled parts which can be difficult to machine using traditional methods – even using the latest 5 axis milling & turning machines. It is difficult to maintain the geometric integrity of fragile, thin-walled components using milling and turning techniques and so, Wire EDM is a useful machining process for this purpose. Effectively a non-contact machining process, relying on the ‘spark’ as the cutting edge, wire EDM can machine through an work-piece with ease – without risk to the integrity of the finished part.
The Latest Clean-Cut Wire EDM Machining Technology
Di-Spark produce Wire EDM precision machined components for high technology engineering. We use the latest clean-cut Wire EDM technology, working closely with our partners at +GF+ AgieCharmilles – a world leading manufacturer of automated electrical discharge machining centres, in this case the AgieCharmilles Clean Cut 300 Wire EDM machines. Wire EDM clean cut generator technology enhances cutting speeds and minimises pollution formation on the component surface – common whilst machining Titanium and Titanium alloys and eradicates formation of a re-cast layer. This makes clean cut Wire EDM perfect for high end engineering applications such as aerospace engine component manufacture.
Wire EDM Video: Manufacture of a Thin-walled Component
Our wire EDM video (below) shows the electrical discharge machining of an alloy component, which started it’s life from an alloy billet machined on an AgieCharmilles 5 axis milling & turning centre. The second operation involves the cutting of the remaining, delicate, thin-walled component from the billet using wire EDM – Wire electrical discharge machining.
