Mission critical components machined for the aerospace and aviation industry must be manufactured to the highest quality standards possible at current technology levels. But at the Di-Spark Group, we don’t stop there. We are always moving forward, innovating, developing, working with our machining suppliers such as +GF+ AgieCharmilles to push current machining capabilities beyond current levels.
But why use a Wire EDM subcontractor over traditional machining methods?
Technology & the drive for development have transformed traditional milling & machining into the impressive 5-axis machining centres that we know today, such as the Mikron Vario 600 machines at Di-Spark’s dedicated multi-axis machining cell. Mill-turn hasn’t escaped the technology drive either, with automated multi-task mill-turn centres, such as the Mazak Integrex J200 machines used within our Milling Cell. There are occasions however, where traditional machining gives way to alternative methods of manufacture. Wire erosion machining, also known as Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) carries benefits for certain component requirements and can of course be combined with multi-axis traditional machining to achieve the ultimate in hi-tech, precision manufacturing.
The benefits of Wire EDM machining for aerospace and mission-critical manufacturing
- Prismatic and extremely complex geometric shapes can be formed using round-the-clock automated programming
- Machined from solid. Integrity of material is maintained throughout machining, as the work piece is manufactured into a component from a single billet.
- Materials can be hardened before wire erosion machining takes place
- The latest Wire Electrical Discharge machines are highly efficient and integrate seamlessly into quality management controls, making them ideal for lean manufacturing requirements, such as AS9100.
- Wire EDM lends itself to machining small-radius inside diameters, narrow slots, acute angles and delicate features at high strength
- Any electrically conductive material can be cut, whether hard or soft, such as carbide, steel, titanium or even diamond.
