Wire Erosion (EDM) for Aerospace, Defence and Hi-tech
Wire EDM is typically employed for hard metals, but not exclusively. Wire Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) opens up the potential to work with materials which are difficult to machine using traditional machining and milling methods, such as carbide, titanium, kovar, hastelloy, inconel and hardened or annealed steel, although EDM will work with any conductive material.
Electrical Discharge Machining for complex geometric shapes
The ability to accurately machine hard materials isn’t the only benefit of EDM. Wire Electrical Discharge Machining is an advanced process using the latest machining technologies, realising the potential to machine difficult angles, detailed contours and bevels, machine holes and apertures at awkward angles and produce internal geometry.
Wire Erosion EDM (Wire Electrical Discharge Machining)
Wire erosion (wire EDM), is a process for machining extremely accurate geometric shapes from most conductive materials such as exotic alloys, ferrous & non-ferrous, stainless steels, and even polycrystalline diamond – often referred to as PCD, which is used in the oil, gas & hard rock mining industries.
Wire EDM is useful for steels requiring heat treatment, because the wire erosion process can be carried out after hardening. This is a big benefit to customers requiring a high degree of accuracy because it avoids the risk of distortion post-machining after the component has been made. Wire EDM is often used to manufacture punches, dies and tooling due to it’s highly accurate and repeatable results.
